Exercising the human spirit by speaking in tongues
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit [the spiritual illumination and the enabling of the Holy Spirit] for the common good of all. 1 Cor 12:7.
The above scripture tells us each one of us can and should function in the power of the Holy Spirit. We profit when the Holy Spirit is manifested through us not when it lies dormant within us. We need to charge our human spirit so that the manifestations of the Holy Spirit are activated and thus we can function in the power of the Holy Spirit. There is a way, a manner listed in the Holy Bible on how we can train our human spirits to reach a state of perfection where we continually triumph over the serpents craftiness and lead a victorious life. The need to train or to condition our human spirit arises because we cannot live off the old infilling. We daily need the infilling of the Holy Spirit. We have to remain in constant fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Secondly, even though we are Christian believers, our spirits pick a lot of garbage through our human senses. Many times, it is not even intentional, we do not do it on purpose but cafty serpent catches us when we are most vulnerable. He sends offense our way or some evil thought in our minds and thus he blurs our spiritual focus. And so our human spirit gets corrupted and we struggle to walk in faith and love.
Saint Paul writes in the book of 2 Corinthians that we should aim for perfection. “Finally, brothers, aim for perfection.” 2 Corinthians 13:11.
The key message or the central theme of my blog is how to function in the power of the Holy Spirit by exercising our human spirit through speaking in tongues. There are other recommended ways too. Like reading the Holy Bible, fasting, giving alms etc. But the most effective way which I have found is that of speaking in tongues. And over a period of time, as I do it regularly, I can beat my body to speak in tongues for long hours… and that is the secret. Saint Paul says, I speak in tongues more than any of you. 1 Corinthians 14:18. At times, we may see no immediate results or perhaps maybe even for a stretch of time, but we need to continue to press-in. Speaking in tongues is more like exercising our bodies. As we continue to speak in tongues, our spiritual muscles will keep strengthening and after a while we will notice that spiritual attacks can’t overpower us anymore.
One important point to keep in mind is that as we speak in tongues, our minds should not lie idle. Infact, the answer we are seeking through speaking in tongues may come to us as a word from the scripture or as a picture in our minds or perhaps as a visitation of an angelic being. So, we need to align our minds to dwell on the things of God. Specially our imagination which is driven by our thoughts. Keep vigil on thoughts and don’t let them stray. And if they do stray, what do you do? You bring them back and continue in tongues. It may look tough initially, also because maintaining focus for such long hours can be a real challenge. To help us overcome this fleshly weakness of ours, we have the Holy Spirit. He works besides us to strengthen us.
One time, I was speaking in tongues to seek an answer for a difficult situation. I was not looking for an immediate physical remedy, but I was seeking the Lord’s counsel to know what was going on in the spiritual realm. I usually focus my mind on the Cross of our Lord Jesus while I pray in tongues. But this one day, I decided to go over the scriptures I have read during the morning devotion hours. And as I was revising the scriptures mentally, suddenly, one scripture popped up and hit my spirit. I can’t explain the experience in words, but the verse shook my spirit. And I knew that was the answer to my difficult situation. And great peace filled my heart and I was confident of the Holy Spirits’ help in my difficult situation. All glory to Lord Jesus!
For physical training is of some value, but godliness (spiritual training) is of value in everything and in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and for the life to come. 1Timothy 4:8
