Rachel, wife of a man with a divine promise
Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter held a unique privilege of being patriarch Jacobs’ most loved wife. Her husband Jacob was no ordinary man. He was a man with a promise from Jehovah! But Rachel did not grasp it. Rather she bore the brunt of the unpleasant family situation she was unknowingly caught in. Initially, Rachel had everything going for her. She was born more attractive than her older sister, Leah. And Jacob loved Rachel so passionately that he willingly worked additional seven years for Laban as a brides’ price. Refer Genesis 29: 20-35
But soon trickery and deceit sour Laban and Jacobs’ relationship. Jacob did not love Leah and this worked against Rachel because it did not go down well with God. So, God chose to bless Leah with sons while Rachel remained barren. Refer Genesis 29. This went on for many years until nine sons of Jacob were born of his other wives. And then finally, the Lord God remembered Rachel and opened her womb. Rachel and Leah together built the house of Jacob and thus fulfilled the divine assignment. Refer Ruth 4:11.
Although Bible doesn’t explicitly mention anywhere, my thought is that Rachel, despite holding such a coveted honour of being Jacobs’ wife, did not make a genuine effort to seek the Lord God of Jacob like Hagar did and came to know the Lord personally as ”Beer Lahai Roi” or like Ruth, a Moabite did and received the ultimate honor of being mentioned in the genealogy of Lord Jesus.
Rachel let barrenness govern her and fought it in the natural by seeking mandrakes. Refer Genesis 30: 14-16.
All Christians are in a covenant relationship with Heavenly Father and are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus. Refer Romans 8:37. But many of our lives get negatively impacted because of the circumstances over which we have little or no control . And many of us let our unfortunate situations hold us captive. So then, what’s the solution? How do we come out of these bondages or limitations forced upon us?
The answer is found only in Jesus.
And I’ll tell you why? Because Holy Spirit is not bound by time and space. He works miracles!
